Unused mid 19th century silk & gold thread brocatelle












This is an unused length of antique French silk & gold thread brocatelle, a warp-faced furnishing fabric resembling silk damask, it sometimes has the warp tensioned (as it does here) so the pattern appears slightly raised. It has a label attached where it has been assessed for auction at some point: 'Mid 19th century brocatelle with raised foliate gold urns. French for the Russian market' .

  1. Thank you for including a picture of the reverse of the fabric. I am always amazed at the skill and craftsmanship of 19th century weavers: even when they use a Jacquard attachment.
