One of my favourite birds, the Jay, an English toile c1770

This was most likely printed by Bromley hall at about 1770 when the English briefly excelled in the production of plate printed cottons after learning the technology from the Irish, before the French became dominant in the market, producing some amazing toiles. This piece is an indigo print on cotton, very rare. Jays and acorns, a wonderful print, showing the quirky character of these beautiful birds, who love to search out and store acorns to eat when in season and store for the winter.

  1. Gorgeous! Jays are such amazing birds, cheeky and chirpy, and the images on the toile of them thieving acorns is a superb visual characterisation.
